According to the CDC , pain, musculoskeletal, back, and stomach symptoms are among the top 10 reasons people seek medical care in the United States. Many people go to their primary care physician (PCP) or the Hospital to find that the only solution that can be offered, most of the time, is a pharmaceutical or surgical option. Beyond that, there is not much counsel. These are all things that a Naprapathic Physician can treat effectively using anti-inflammatory modalities other than drugs or surgical intervention.
A Naprapathic Physician, often confused with a Naturopathic Physician or even a Chiropractor, is a Physician who focuses on the root cause of pain and inflammation throughout the connective tissues of the body with noninvasive measures. Naprapathic Physicians are a part of the physical medicine and rehabilitation area of medicine and must be licensed and board certified (NBNE). They may diagnose, perform physical exams, order labs/imaging, and use a variety of modalities (ultrasound, low-level laser therapy, scar release, sound and heat therapies, etc.) to treat neuromuscular and nutritional dysfunction. However, they are not narrowly focused on a specific area of the body (spine for a Chiropractors). While they can use a holistic approach, they do not tend to use a lot of botanical medicine or homeopathy (Naturopathic Physicians).
They also deploy manual manipulative techniques like a Chiropractor or Osteopathic Physician, focusing more on the connective tissues (Ligaments, tendons, muscles, and their connections to bones & the spine). Often many Naprapathic Physicians have a Chiropractic, Physical Therapy, or Osteopathic background to accompany their education as a Naprapathic Physician. Naprapathic and Chiropractic were started simultaneously in the 1900s by D.D. Palmer and Oakley Smith. Most commonly, they treat neurological dysfunction, organ and musculoskeletal inflammation, musculoskeletal aches and chronic pain, postural issues, chronic and post-acute soft tissue injuries, or conditions where connective tissue dysfunction is a major contributor (autoimmune, nervous system, movement disorders, etc.). Further, they use nutritional knowledge to help ensure the resoluteness of the treatments and therapies they deploy. Naprapathic Physicians can either take patients directly or they can and do take referals and refer patients if they show evidence of needing a pharmaceutical or surgical intervention or if a more conservative and noninvasive modality would not benefit the patient.
There are currently fewer than 55 licensed and board-certified Naprapathic Physicians in New Mexico and approximately 200 Nationwide, and growing.
